How may i Support you?

I support and empower you to express your end-of-life wishes, navigate the medical system, make end of life preparations, and make informed decisions while addressing practical and emotional changes and challenges. I bring my curiosity and tools, my medical and non-medical experience, and a compassionate heart to support you, your family, and your circle of support.

My objective is to bring a holistic approach into my work with you as a death doula and end of life planner. I strive to bring peace and dignity to the human experience of death and dying. I believe we all deserve to live until we die.

Services

Organization/Education

I provide educational sessions about death and dying related topics and end of life planning, which includes a variety of important subjects such as creating meaningful Legacy projects that allow individuals to reflect on their lives and share their stories with loved ones. Additionally, I cover the intricacies of funeral arrangements and the various after death to do lists. I also emphasize the significance of Advanced Directives, helping attendees understand how these are one of many important documents that can facilitate better communication about their healthcare preferences when they are no longer able to speak for themselves. My sessions offer a supportive environment where participants can ask questions, share experiences, and gain the knowledge they need to navigate these sensitive topics with confidence and compassion.

By making preparations and transparently communicating about what you want, you significantly alleviate the burden of decisions that your loved ones and your circle of support have to make during highly emotional times, or even during an unexpected crisis. This preparation can foster deeper connections in times of need and serve to provide peace of mind for everyone involved. Moreover, addressing these complex issues beforehand can also reduce both the amount of time and resources expended, ensuring that your family can focus on honoring your wishes rather than grappling with uncertainties or disagreements. In essence, taking these thoughtful steps not only supports your own desires but also nurtures the emotional well-being of those you care about.

I can help you from the time you are told a diagnosis until your death. Coordinating care and assistance for your family and circle of support. Using my background and experience in the medical system, I can guide you so that your needs are heard and respected.

Human Touch & Support

I provide support in a variety of ways, as each situation is different and requires a tailored approach. A few include: sitting vigil to offer comfort and companionship in those final moments, respite care for caregivers to ensure they have the time to rest and restore their energy, and actively supporting caregivers in their emotional journey, allowing them to process their own feelings. Being present for the range of human experiences and emotions that arise around death and dying is crucial, as it acknowledges the complexity of grief. I also offer grief support, helping individuals navigate through their sorrow, facilitating discussions about memories, and assisting them in finding ways to honor their loved ones while also caring for their own wellbeing during this challenging time.

After Death

Providing a safe space and support for the circle of support and/or family members in bereavement and grief is crucial for the healing process. Everyone experiences loss differently, and having a nurturing environment where loved ones can express their feelings, share memories, and find comfort in one another is essential. This support can take many forms, from informal gatherings to organized support groups, allowing individuals to connect and find solace together.

Addressing practical matters after death may include organizing a home funeral, memorial service, or celebration of life. These events allow families and friends to come together to honor the deceased in a personal and meaningful way. Each person can be celebrated and remembered uniquely, reflecting their individual spirit, values, and the impact they had on the lives of others. This is where Legacy work comes in, as it encourages family members to share stories, cherished memories, and significant milestones that can be passed down through generations. Creating a legacy not only honors the deceased but also helps the living process their grief and celebrate life.

Another important aspect of dealing with loss is “death cleaning,” a concept that centers on finding a way to process and manage the belongings left behind. Sorting through and organizing the possessions of a loved one can be an emotionally charged yet cathartic experience. It allows the bereaved to reflect on shared experiences, make decisions about what to keep or pass on, and ultimately find closure. This process can also serve as an opportunity to connect with others, as family members and friends often offer their support during this challenging time.

Overall, fostering an environment where bereaved individuals feel supported and understood can significantly aid in their journey through grief. By addressing both emotional and practical facets of loss, families can navigate this difficult period together, creating lasting memories that honor their loved ones while also allowing for personal healing and growth.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Unfortunately, sometimes there is confusion around what a death doula does, let me say a few things that I do not do:

  • When I am working as a death doula, I am not working under my healthcare license as a registered nurse. All medical related questions will be redirected to your medical team. I can help you navigate and guide you towards questions for your medical team. I will not administer any prescription medications. I will not put the individual dying at greater risk.
  • I will maintain the privacy laws of HIPAA, as a professional code of conduct as a death doula. I will not violate the privacy of the dying and the family/circle of support. Even if I am hired by a loved one or a member of the circle of support, I serve and honor the wishes of the dying individual as best as I can.
  • I am not a housekeeper, cook, cleaner, nursing assistant, or servant. At times I may assist in assisting with an activity on occasion, it will be case dependent.
  • I will not participate in efforts to violate the law. I will report any signs of abuse and misconduct.
  • I reserve the right to cancel the agreement for any purpose and anytime. Nonrefundable.

Death is not the opposite of life, but a part of it.
